In the old days, mini's were quite ad hoc and spontaneous contraptions. Often prototyped on the kitchen table by hobbyists. And needed the code to be toggled in by hand. Paper tape and hollerith cards were often used for persistent storage. Huge magtape drives and washing-machine-like disk drives later emerged. The whole sequence of evolution ocurred almost the same about 10 or so years later, with micros such as the Altair and Sinclair family of machines.
