The Rider on the White Horse is a novella by Theodor Storm from the literary realism period. Published in April 1888, it is Storm's best-known story and is considered one of his later works.
The novella, which centers on the fictional dike reeve Hauke Haien, is based on a legend that Storm had studied for decades. However, he did not begin writing the novella until July 1886 and completed it in February 1888, just months before his death. The novella was first published in April 1888 in the magazine Deutsche Rundschau.
