The climate crisis seems to be going just as planned. The world is boiling yet action is slow at the scales needed to stop disaster. Knowing for decades the effects of an industry on the world and staying the course emphasizes that all is going as expected. A 70's era boardroom likely had a conversation noting the effects of increased fossil fuel use and figured the energy pumped from the soil into the sky would eventually branch into subsequent energy industries of the same form as horse and buggy to Model Ts or caravans to steam trains.
