This accomplished actress is a Hollywood celebrity now, but she was originally an underachiever ; early on, she grew to despise her family's obsession with personal achievement. She spent a lot of time reading as a girl, but she dropped out of college and lived as a Greenwich Village bohemian, although she began secretly studying judo after a terrifying incident in the streets.

She eventually gravitated to the theatre and fell in love with it - and it fell in love with her, too. Her off-Broadway work brought her to the attention of a movie producer, who signed her to a contract with his studio - and he, too, had fallen in love with her. Fame and money followed, the latter augmented with the divorce settlement she received from the producer. He could have crushed her career, but he tells anybody who'll listen that he still loves her and would never harm her. "Besides," he said, "there's always more money to be made."

As far as avocations / hobbies go, she stays fit to get the best roles, and she has worked hard to earn her black belt in judo. Reflecting back, she told an interviewer that judo helped her career, especially at first. "I knew how to move gracefully, how to claim my space on the stage. I think I might have never stood out without it, and standing out is important when you're one of many who want to be onstage."
