ArtistLarge land-dwelling being that looks like a cross between a slug and a squid. It is dark green in color and moves on its belly like a slug, but has ten tentacles around its mouth area like a squid. Two of the tentacles are much longer than the others and are forked at the end. It has compound eyes on either side of its head, which is large in proportion to its body. Make the picture photorealistic.
The Mokktar were humanity's first opponents in an interstellar war. The circumstances leading to the war are unclear, but both sides have determined that they were being manipulated by outside influences.
The Mokktar are eusocial, with millions living in association with a Mother Hive. Each apparently-independent organism exists in connection to all of its fellow Mokktar and its Mother Hive. An independent Mokktar, while extremely intelligent and capable of initiative, does not see itself as an individual but as one part of the Mother Hive. The Mother Hive functions much like a beehive on a continental scale. The Mother Hive is capable of extracting minerals from a planetary crust via its root system and refining them to high levels of purity. Further processes inside the Hive can produce manufactured goods needed by the Mokktar as well as new Mother Hives and Mokktar themselves.
While the Mokktar and their Mother Hives have been observed on hundreds of worlds, there is no fossil record of the Mokktar, or any possible evolutionary predecessors, on any of them. They are believed to have been bioengineered by a race vastly more advanced than humanity for use as warriors and slaves.
While the war between humans and Mokktar cannot be attributed to any one cause or set of causes, its end came decisively in the 28th century when the stars of several Mokktar-occupied solar systems went nova without warning. The Mokktar immediately reached out to humanity and explained that they have a common foe that had been manipulating the two civilizations against each other. It is this conflict that drives events in the story.
