ArtistAnthropomorphic sea otter standing on hind legs. Its fur is reddish-purple in color. Its body is relatively slender and its face more human than otter-like. Its arms and legs are roughly in the same proportion to its body as a human's. Its hands have three fingers and an opposable thumb, all with retractable claws. Alien race that was humanity’s first peaceful contact in my original science fiction stories. Philosophical almost to a fault but capable of extreme violence when pushed. They are marsupials who have three genders: a male who provides the male gamete; a female who provides the female gamete, and a ‘bearer’ who carries the infant from an early fetal stage to maturity in a pouch, not unlike Earth kangaroos. The ‘bearers’ are for all intents and purposes an underclass, and are the result of genetic experimentation thousands of years ago. At their best, the vehKhanim regard humans (vehSolim) as younger siblings—capable and in need of both friendly guidance and the occasional rough teasing. At their worst, they can be as bigoted and elitist as humans have ever thought of being. However, even the most bigoted among them recognizes humanity’s importance as allies and trade partners.
