The Rivatti originate from a solar system in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The average low metallicity of that dwarf galaxy means that they are the only sentient life to have evolved in that galaxy. Beginning about 30,000 years ago, the Rivatti began to explore interstellar space and encountered alien life for the first time. The presence of other sentient life offended them, and they immediately annihilated that race. Using a bioengineered species called the Mokktar as their foot soldiers and slaves, they continued the process until they encountered another alien race called the Eriarti. The Eriarti saw themselves as superior to all other life forms, but not so superior that they could not abide their presence. Through direct conquest (as with humans) or diplomatic manipulation (as with the veh'Khanim) the Eriarti pushed their vassals into warfare with the Rivatti and the Mokktar.

The main point of contention was a world known by humans as Haislip's World, which exists at a point of gravitational stability between the Milky Way Galaxy and both Magellanic Clouds--making it an excellent waypoint for the gravitic manipulation drives that allowed every sentient race to bypass the limitations of the speed of light. Haislip's World is the most strategic location between three galaxies. The native inhabitants of that world, the Borleeth, were quickly enslaved by the Rivatti as foot soldiers in the war.
