Vincent van Gogh and Émilie Charmy met in Paris, where Vincent had settled in 1886. They became friends and Vincent introduced her to his friends in the artist community, including Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Vincent was impressed by her paintings and wrote about them to his brother Theo, who was also an art dealer.
Although there are no concrete indications of a romantic relationship between Vincent and Émilie, Vincent sometimes wrote about her in letters to Theo. He described her as "a beautiful young woman, dark-haired and dark-eyed, with an intelligent and lively face." Vincent also talked about her love of nature and her talent for painting.
In short, Émilie Charmy was one of the few women who really liked and appreciated Vincent van Gogh for her artistry and personality.
