“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
Choronzon first appears as Coronzon in the angelic communications recorded by English mathematician and occultist John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley on April 21, 1584. In their Enochian revelations, Coronzon is the demonic intelligence responsible for humanity's expulsion from Eden and the loss of its original angelic language.
Three centuries later, Aleister Crowley transformed Choronzon into the personification of dispersion, fragmentation, and the dissolution of identity. In 1909, during a magical working in the Algerian desert with Victor Neuburg, Crowley claimed to encounter Choronzon in ZAX, the Tenth Aethyr, described in The Vision and the Voice.
Choronzon: The Demon of the Abyss
Choronzon is not simply evil. In Crowley's occult system, it represents the ego's desperate resistance to annihilation at the threshold of the Abyss.
Nietzsche's abyss gazes back; Choronzon is what answers.
