There are bad omens, there are catastrophic omens, and then there is the unspeakable cosmic indignity of being murdered by bedroom furniture.
Good Lord.
I have seen some disturbing cards in my time. The Tower exploding. Death riding through the countryside on a horse that looks like it hasn't eaten since the Crusades. The Devil conducting business with naked people who should have hired an attorney.
But this is something else entirely.
Here we have a woman with the complexion of a radioactive tangerine, her hair standing on end like a deranged electrical experiment, staring up at a pillow descending from the heavens.
A PILLOW!
Not a meteorite. Not the wrath of God. Not some enormous celestial squid sent to collect unpaid karmic debts.
A perfectly ordinary pillow.
And therein lies the terrible genius of this card.
THE UPRIGHT MEANING — THE TYRANNY OF COMFORT
Beware, pilgrim! The universe is not necessarily planning to destroy you through hardship. It may attempt something infinitely more sinister.
It may make you comfortable.
Comfort is the velvet glove of annihilation. It arrives with warm blankets, reassuring voices, a reasonable pension, and the suggestion that perhaps you should stop asking so many questions.
Before long, you're sitting in a reclining chair watching television commercials for pharmaceutical products whose side effects include spontaneous combustion and an overwhelming desire to purchase another reclining chair.
The pillow represents the accumulated weight of everything you have agreed not to notice.
Every compromise. Every unspoken objection. Every perfectly reasonable decision that buried another small piece of your magnificent, unreasonable soul.
And now the whole upholstered conspiracy is coming down on your head.
THE REVERSED MEANING — THE GREAT PILLOW INSURRECTION
Excellent news!
The pillow has missed.
You have rolled sideways at the last possible moment, leaving the forces of cosmic suffocation clutching nothing but a handful of bed linen.
Your hair remains electrically charged. Your eyes are enormous. Your nervous system is broadcasting emergency signals to satellites that haven't even been launched.
But you're alive!
The reversed card announces rebellion against suffocating expectations, emotional anesthesia, and the dreadful temptation to spend the remainder of your existence behaving sensibly.
It is time to get out of bed, preferably before someone invents a blanket with governmental authority.
THE PROPHECY
Something soft is approaching.
It may be an opportunity. It may be a relationship. It may be a seemingly harmless obligation disguised as kindness.
Do not panic merely because it is soft.
But examine its intentions.
The essential question is not whether the pillow will fall.
The question is whether you intend to remain beneath it.
FINAL VERDICT
This card does not predict death.
It predicts the moment immediately before surrender.
And that, my friend, is the most dangerous moment in the entire human experiment.
Because somewhere between the pillow and the terrified orange face lies the last remaining territory of human freedom.
A few inches of empty space.
Guard it ferociously.
And for heaven's sake, NEVER TRUST FURNITURE THAT FLOATS.
