Card XVIII — THE MIND
Card XIV — ABOUT TO BE SMOTHERED BY A PILLOW
Mamma mia! What have we here? Two cards! Two magnificent catastrophes! One man has a bedroom floating above his head, and the other has a pillow preparing to murder him! And you call this a tarot reading? This is not a tarot reading! This is a furniture conspiracy!
First, THE MIND!
Look at this beautiful creature! His head sticks out of the Buddhist emptiness like a turnip planted by God himself! His hair rises toward heaven, each little strand growing an eye! Why? Because two eyes are not enough to understand existence! We need ten thousand! And even then, we will misunderstand the furniture!
Above him floats a bedroom in a plastic aquarium. A marvelous invention! Originally designed to give tropical plants freedom in the Pacific Northwest! But somebody stole the patent, removed the plants, installed a bed, and now the whole contraption floats above the poor fellow's skull!
This card represents consciousness, imagination, and the terrible human tendency to decorate things that do not require decoration.
Now the second card!
ABOUT TO BE SMOTHERED BY A PILLOW!
Madonna santissima! The pillow has escaped!
It has abandoned its responsibilities! It was supposed to support the head, not attack it! For centuries, the pillow has been civilization's most trusted employee. Now it has joined the revolution!
And look at the victim! Those enormous eyes! That expression! He knows! He knows the pillow is coming! But can he run? No! He has no legs! He is buried in the metaphysical floor!
This card represents the sudden reversal of everything you believed was protecting you.
Now we must read the two cards together.
Ah! Here is the terrible revelation!
The floating bedroom contains the pillow, and the pillow contains the bedroom! The mind dreams of comfort, but comfort dreams of annihilating the mind!
The silk thread connects the sleeper to consciousness, but who is pulling it? The soul? The furniture salesman? A Buddhist monk with an excellent sense of humor?
And what happens when the pillow falls?
BOOM!
Enlightenment!
For one magnificent instant, the entire universe is awake! Every hair becomes an eye! Every eye sees emptiness! Every piece of furniture confesses its crimes!
Then the water comes crashing down, the hair becomes an octopus, and the universe returns to its ordinary business of pretending everything is perfectly normal.
But listen! Listen carefully!
The cards are not predicting death. No! They are predicting the collapse of an illusion.
You believed you were the dreamer. You believed the bedroom belonged to you. You believed the pillow was your friend.
But perhaps you are the pillow dreaming of a man!
Perhaps the bedroom is dreaming of an aquarium!
Perhaps the aquarium is dreaming of the Pacific Northwest!
And somewhere in the immense emptiness, a little tropical plant is laughing because it has finally escaped the entire arrangement!
THE FINAL VERDICT:
Beware of your own inventions. They may acquire gravity.
And if enlightenment comes tonight, keep one eye open and another on the pillow.
Because, my dear friends, consciousness is a miracle!
But gravity?
