I've been messsing around creating music for YouTube lately, writing lyrics and putting them into various AI text-to-song generators along with some VERY specific instructions to get something that feels a bit more human and creatively meaty than just going with whatever the AI spits out. One result of this is that I've basically invented several distinct bands to categorise different songs with different vibes. One band is Tragic Eight Ball (with its lead singer, the inimitable Vance Rancid, pictured here). They're a British punk band that sing about some very silly things, including the turgid modern nightmare that is shopping at Tesco in rush hour, the diminishing quality of Doctor Who, and the subtle greatness of Greggs the Bakers. Here, our frontman is leaning against an off-brand TARDIS, smoking two cigarettes because why not? It's not all punk, by the way: there's some ska, some Mersey Sound and, tomorrow, I intend to add an electro-swing number about Poirot, because it aggrieves me that such a thing does not already exist.
