Heraclitus believed that "It belongs to all men to know themselves and to think rightly." But instead of actually recognizing ourselves as part of this world and becoming aware of what we are doing to the earth and thus also to ourselves, we build temples that we ostensibly dedicate to some gods, but with which we actually exalt, glorify and praise ourselves. In doing so, man has remained an animal, an ape.
Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going? We know nothing! More humility would do us good. The world is like a book and "a book is a mirror, if a monkey looks into it, no apostle can look out", as Georg Christoph Lichtenberg already knew.
