"My tongue is my enemy." A long tongue is a curse for many talented people. History is full of examples where a sharp mind and the gift of words, instead of bringing fame and recognition, led to a tragic end. The desire to share one's thoughts, criticize the existing order, or simply express one's own opinion, especially in an era of totalitarianism or cruel rulers, became deadly dangerous. Words that burst out before the consequences were considered ruined careers, broke lives, and sent to the scaffold those who could have brought enormous benefit to society. The irony of fate: it is precisely the brightest minds, capable of generating breakthrough ideas and inspiring others, who most often became victims of their own eloquence.
However, the "tongue-enemy" did not spare fools and empty talkers either, although he sometimes showed leniency towards them, as if writing off their mistakes as innate stupidity. What can you take from a fool except the harm he does to himself? But even their talkativeness, their inability to hold their tongues, often led to ridiculous situations, comic failures, and, ultimately, damage to themselves. This demonstrates the universality of the proverb: regardless of the level of intelligence, the inability to control one's speech can turn against the speaker, demonstrating that wisdom lies not only in the ability to speak, but also in the ability to remain silent - a golden rule!
