More about Beyond Reach

From this height, the coast resolves into composition rather than geography. Forests
become texture, surf becomes ornament, and the cliffs—so impressive when
struggled over—arrange themselves into something almost considerate. One does
not arrive here in the traditional sense. Arrival implies effort. This is simply where one
finds oneself, once lesser modes of transit have been set aside.

The vessel maintains altitude not for safety, but for perspective. Below, roads still
wind and harbors still fill, their purpose intact and commendable. Up here, however,
motion is optional. The decks are broad enough for lingering, the pace slow enough
that nothing insists. The world continues beneath you, industrious and sincere, while
you pass over it without interrupting the view.

Guests are encouraged to circulate freely, though there is no urgency. Conversations
drift. Glassware remains improbably full. The radomes hum softly, doing whatever it
is such things do, sparing everyone the inconvenience of curiosity. One does not
inquire too closely into mechanisms at this level; they function by virtue of having
been commissioned correctly.

It is said that anyone may admire the coastline, and this is true. The sight costs
nothing. The distance, however, has already been paid for.
