According to yogic physiology, a human being is composed of five layers or “bodies,” known as the koshas. These layers range from the gross physical dimension to the most subtle, non-physical dimension. 1. Physical Body (Annamaya Kosha) This is the visible body made from the food we consume. Because it is built from what we eat, food and lifestyle strongly influence its condition. 2. Mental Body (Manomaya Kosha) The mind is not seen as something limited to the brain. Every cell carries intelligence, forming an entire “mental body.” Sadhguru compares the physical body to hardware and the mental body to software. 3. Energy Body (Pranamaya Kosha) The energy body is the life force that powers the physical and mental bodies. Though subtler, it is still considered physical in nature. If the energy body is balanced and vibrant, it naturally supports physical and psychological well-being. 4. Etheric / Transitional Body (Vijnanamaya Kosha) This layer is described as a bridge between the physical and non-physical dimensions. The term “etheric” is only an approximate translation because this layer represents a transition beyond ordinary physical existence. 5. Bliss Body (Anandamaya Kosha) This is the deepest and completely non-physical dimension of a person. Because the non-physical cannot truly be described, it is called the “bliss body” simply because whenever people touch this dimension within themselves, they experience profound bliss. The main idea is that when the first three layers — physical, mental, and energy — are properly aligned and balanced, a person gains access to the deeper dimensions of themselves, especially the blissful state of being.
An infographic illustrating five layers of being: Physical Body, Mental Body, Energy Body, Etheric/Transitional Body, and Bliss Body. The layers are stacked vertically, with the Physical Body at the top and the Bliss Body at the bottom.
The Physical Body layer shows a muscular human torso with various food items like grains, fruits (apples), and rice around it.
The Mental Body layer depicts a swirling vortex of glowing lines and particles in shades of blue, pink, and white, representing cosmic energy or thought patterns.
The Energy Body layer features a meditating figure in the lotus position, outlined with glowing golden lines emanating from the chest and spreading outwards in luminous tendrils.
The Etheric/Transitional Body layer shows a subtle, translucent white and cream-colored ethereal form suggesting waves or flowing energy.
The Bliss Body layer demonstrates a meditating figure in a lotus position, radiating bright white light from its chest, enclosed within transparent, concentric, oval-shaped energy fields.
Text labels and descriptions are placed on the left and right sides of the layers, explaining each body and its spiritual significance. The overall background is a light gray.
