NO TEXT IN PICTURE. PART 14 — DEATH: DOES KNOWING WE WILL DIE GIVE LIFE MEANING? There is one certainty shared by every human being: We will die. And strangely, the knowledge of death may be one of the things that makes us search for meaning in the first place. If we lived forever, would anything feel urgent? Would we create today if we knew we had unlimited tomorrows? Would we love differently? Would we care about leaving something behind? Perhaps mortality gives life something that immortality might take away: preciousness. A sunset is beautiful partly because it ends. A childhood is precious because it passes. A relationship becomes precious because time with another person is limited. And perhaps life itself feels meaningful because we know it cannot continue forever. But death also confronts us with the ultimate mystery. What happens when the body stops? Is consciousness completely extinguished? Does something continue? Is there rebirth? Or is consciousness entirely dependent upon the physical brain? Science has not provided a universally accepted answer to the deepest version of that question. And humanity has been asking it for thousands of years. Perhaps this is why death is not merely a biological event. It is also a philosophical event. It forces us to ask: What am I? A body? A brain? A personality? A stream of consciousness? Something more? And if something of us continues... what exactly is it that continues? Perhaps the fear of death is partly the fear of losing ourselves. But perhaps another possibility exists: Maybe accepting death can change the way we live. Instead of asking: “How long will I live?” perhaps we should sometimes ask: “What will I do with the consciousness I have while I am here?” And this brings us to the final question before my own conclusion: If death is inevitable, and if meaning is something consciousness creates... what happens when we stop creating meaning altogether?
