Galápagos Islands~ The Galápagos Islands (Archipiélago de Colón or Islas Galápagos in Spanish) are a volcanic (and from a volcanological point of view, one of the most active) archipelago of 14 major islands, 6 smaller ones and 107 rocks in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs to Ecuador and forms an independent province of it. The islands' most famous animals are the Galapagos giant tortoises or elephant tortoises (Geochelone nigra), which are now among the best-studied wildlife in the world.
