In the beginning was creation. Whether we use the religious model (God the Father, Dieu Pater, Jupiter, Brahman, etc.) or the scientific/cybernetic (the Big Bang, the Constructor, the Bootstrapping of the Universe by interaction of appropriate virtual particles). The quantum fields (akasha) came to be due to the flow of energy (quantum interactions) and entropy (configuration and form), and that defined the Universe in which we now abide :) There may even be a continuous process of creation according to the "multiple worlds" or "parallel universes" theory -- each time a decision is made, the "quantum wave function" collapses into an "observable" (real) component, and a "virtual" (imaginary) component, occupying the same space and time but in another parallel dimension. This can never be proved or disproved, because the quantum forces do not interact between universes (except Gravity -- the overall "shape" of spacetime -- which is why Gravity is so weak (by a factor of about 2 to the power of 137, or 10 to the power of 40) compared to the other three forces (electromagnetism, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear).
