Prompt

Surrealism in the style of Salvador Dalí: 3D, a sun resembling a rose in the sky; a cityscape featuring a tower with a melting clock and houses that look like elephants standing on tall, slender legs; and a street café where ladies sit at a table wearing dresses with a giraffe-like spotted print. Forest Fire Vogue Magazine learns patience — it sits still as a red flower, burning slowly enough to watch seasons change around it. Spanish Baroque – Stark realism with austere religiosity; intense chiaroscuro portraying saints and commoners with raw humanity (Velázquez, Zurbarán).No text.

More about The City Sub Rosa

In that city the elephants walked on legs as thin as knitting needles and carried cathedrals upon their backs, yet nobody found this unusual. The citizens were accustomed to architectural animals. They complained only when an elephant stopped beneath a balcony and the bells in its cathedral kept everyone awake during the siesta.

Every afternoon four women met at the same café beneath the enormous rose that hung in the sky.

The rose had appeared without explanation one Tuesday in April. Astronomers declared it impossible. Priests declared it significant. The mayor declared it municipal property and attempted to tax it. The rose ignored them all and continued burning quietly above the rooftops.

At the café the women drank coffee from cups so delicate that sunlight passed through them. They discussed husbands, dresses, funerals, recipes, and the scandalous price of oranges. Behind them the elephants crossed the plaza with the solemnity of diplomats.

Then one summer a gigantic woman appeared at the edge of the city.

Her face rose higher than the clock tower. Around her head glittered a wilderness of crystal, silver leaves, broken glass and something resembling frozen lightning. A burning rose blossomed beside her throat.

She said nothing.

This troubled the authorities considerably.

The mayor sent a delegation asking her intentions. The delegation returned three days later saying they had reached only her shoulder.

The bishop rang every bell.

The scientists measured her shadow.

The newspapers printed special editions.

The four women at the café simply ordered another pot of coffee.

“She is beautiful,” said one.

“She is too large,” said another.

“That is usually what people say about anything they cannot explain,” said the third.

The fourth said nothing because she had noticed something peculiar.

Whenever the enormous woman breathed, the city changed slightly.

A staircase appeared where there had been a wall. A fountain began pouring upward. A clock melted down the side of its tower without losing a single minute. Roses opened inside locked rooms. The elephants grew taller until their cathedrals passed among the clouds.

By sunset the distinction between possible and impossible had become merely a matter of municipal paperwork.

The mayor resigned.

The astronomers went drinking.

The bishop ordered coffee.

And the four women continued their conversation beneath the celestial rose as calmly as if nothing extraordinary had happened.

Perhaps nothing had.

For in that city the miraculous was considered vulgar only when somebody pointed it out.
