An ambrotype is a positive image that is printed on a translucent glass plate - it could be clear glass, black glass, ruby glass or even milk glass, and is typically housed within a protective case. Ambrotypes are backed with something opaque to make them readable as a positive.
The invention of wet collodion photography processes in the 1850s allowed the development of ambrotypes and tintypes. These new formats shared many characteristics with the earlier daguerreotypes but were quicker and cheaper to produce.
Fewer ambrotypes than daguerreotypes or tin types have survived since the glass made them more vulnerable to damage.
