The Foundering Gap was created by accident when a small fleet was caught by a rare ocean swell and deposited in the tidepools of this valley. The particular swell only happens on the full moon so the sailors were stranded for nearly a month. They converted their ships into the first homes and survived on the unusual bounty of the pools. The modern buildings are set on a foundation but float with the swell and use anchor cables to winch back down to their foundation as the swell recedes.
