Me & My Bakeneko Cat
It all started on a rainy Tuesday. I found him shivering under a vending machine, his matted fur the color of storm clouds, his eyes glowing gold like twin moons. Something about him seemed... off. But I scooped him up anyway and brought him home.
I named him Mochi.
At first, he acted like any regular cat — aloof, nap-loving, judgmental. But soon, the oddities began. He’d disappear and reappear in places I swore I hadn’t seen him enter. My mirrors would fog over with paw prints from the inside. At night, I’d hear low, throaty purring that sounded more like chanting.
Then came the night I caught him walking on two legs, sipping my tea.
“I suppose there’s no point pretending anymore,” he said, brushing his tail like it was the most natural thing in the world.
I stared, teacup halfway to my lips.
“I’m a Bakeneko,” he said. “A yokai. A supernatural cat. But I like you. So I’ll stay.”
And stay he did.
Mochi, my magical, mildly sarcastic Bakeneko, now helps me with everything — from warding off bad luck to solving crossword puzzles (he's eerily good at those). Sometimes, he dances by the moonlight to make the rice cooker work better.
Life hasn’t been the same since.
But I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Because when you live with a Bakeneko cat, every day is a little strange… and a lot more magical.
