I am very excited to join Diversity Saturday in support of all people who feel confused, undervalued and misunderstood.
Today I present to you the two faces of Trichotillomania - the image in the mirror is of the girl pulling out her hair, overwhelmed by negative and anxious thoughts, and in the foreground you see the girl's realization process when she sees the result of her actions (the damage she has done to herself self-inflicted).
Trichotillomania, or pathological hair pulling, is a common but underappreciated psychological disorder. People with trichotillomania experience an overwhelming urge to pull out their hair. Many sufferers may not know they have the condition. They just see their action as a bad habit. Others may experience severe physical and psychological symptoms. For some people, trichotillomania can be mild and generally manageable. For others, the compulsive urge is overwhelming.
It is not entirely clear what causes Trichotillomania. Can be:
- a way to deal with stress or anxiety
- a chemical imbalance in the brain similar to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- changes in hormone levels during puberty
- a type of self-harm to seek relief from emotional stress and pain
