Highly detailed traditional ink-and-watercolor conservation illustration of the Charco Azul Pupfish (Cyprinodon veronicae), a species Extinct in the Wild, depicting its historic freshwater spring oasis in the semi-arid landscape of Nuevo León, Mexico. Central subject: small male Charco Azul Pupfish swimming diagonally through clear spring water, approximately 5 cm long, compact natural body, proportionate fins, relatively large head, subtle dark lateral bars, elegant violet-blue breeding coloration, delicate eye and mouth, anatomically accurate fin placement. Underwater foreground: intricate fine ink drawing of submerged aquatic plants, fine algae, muddy substrate, tiny stones, roots and miniature freshwater organisms. Use precise zoological linework for the fish and botanical linework for the vegetation. Create a split-level composition where the upper portion reveals the arid Mexican landscape above the water: cactus, dry grasses, weathered rocks, sparse vegetation and distant mountains beneath a warm sky. Use fine black and sepia ink, varied line weight, delicate stippling, cross-hatching and broken contour lines. Combine the linework with transparent watercolor washes of violet-blue, turquoise, olive, ochre, warm brown and muted desert green. Create beautiful surface reflections where the underwater world and desert landscape visually overlap. The artwork should resemble an exceptionally detailed traditional expedition natural-history plate while remaining expressive and emotionally engaging. Subtle visual symbolism: lush life beneath the water contrasted against the dry landscape above, communicating the extraordinary dependence of the fish on a single freshwater spring. Traditional ink and watercolor on textured archival paper, visible paper grain, organic pigment variation, hand-rendered imperfections, sophisticated conservation illustration. Mood: quiet, delicate, nostalgic and hopeful, with the feeling of a lost ecosystem waiting to be restored. Non-photorealistic traditional ink and watercolor painting, no photography, no photorealism, no hyperrealism, no CGI, no 3D rendering, no digital photographic appearance. No text, no labels, no typography, no letters, no logo, no watermark, no frame, no border. Painting by an artist named “RY” signed in the bottom right in small, swooping cursive Golden letters.

🔬 Scientific Information

Common name: Charco Azul Pupfish
Scientific name: Cyprinodon veronicae
Family: Cyprinodontidae
Order: Cyprinodontiformes
Class: Actinopterygii
Country: Mexico
Endemic: Yes
Current IUCN status: Extinct in the Wild (EW)

FishBase records it as a freshwater, non-migratory species from the Río San Juan system of Mexico and gives a maximum recorded length of about 5.5 cm.

The Charco Azul Pupfish once lived in one isolated freshwater spring in the Chihuahuan Desert of northeastern Mexico. Groundwater extraction for agriculture gradually reduced the spring until it completely dried, and the fish disappeared from the wild by the late 1990s. Fortunately, conservationists had maintained captive populations, so the species survived. A major 2026 initiative now aims to return it to the wild.
