Chapter 41 The Place That Existed Before the Cottage Part 2 The Knock Beneath the First Beginning
The fourth knock came from beneath the white mist. The stranger in the pale coat stopped smiling. “That never happened before.” Mara gripped the silver key. “You said this has repeated.” “It has.” “Then what changed?” The stranger looked at the faceless figure. “They crossed the zero.” Tiktora showed the broken circle. A fifth knock came. Linora glanced toward the narrowing doorway. Sir Fegelot still held it open. “Whatever is knocking is coming closer.” Madam Arabica rolled to the black line. “There is something below us.” Biblior frowned. “There is no ground.” “Then something is knocking on nothing.” A sixth knock sounded. The mist beneath Mara’s boots rippled. Lumio flashed: PATTERN CHANGED. The vanished wizard stared. “Because Mara refused both keys.” “No,” the stranger said. “She has refused them before.” “Then what changed?” Mara asked. The stranger pointed toward Sir Fegelot and Madam Arabica. “This time you brought witnesses the Cottage never counted.” The faceless figure stepped onto the black line. “And me.” “You were never supposed to cross.” Another knock came beneath them. The black line split. White mist poured into the crack. Horologia watched the broken circle rotate. “Something is opening.” “Something is remembering that it was open,” the stranger said. Mara raised the silver key. “Is this what closes it?” “It did once.” “What happened?” “You built a road over it.” The wizard went still. “I built the road.” “You completed it. Mara chose where it led.” Mara stared. “Before the Cottage existed?” “Before it had decided it existed.” The mist cleared beneath the crack. Far below lay a dark surface that reflected nothing. Madam Arabica rolled backward. “I do not remember that.” Sir Fegelot lowered his bristles. “Neither do I.” The stranger looked relieved. “Good.” “Why?” Mara asked. “Because if they remembered it, it would already be here.” Lumio chirped: RECORD BELOW RECORD< Biblior stared. “A record beneath the first?” The wizard stepped closer. “Then this room was not first.” The stranger said nothing. Mara noticed. “What is beneath us?” “The reason the first witness was needed.” The faceless figure moved closer. “Who was the first witness?” The stranger looked at them. “You were.” Silence. “No,” the figure said. “Before you had a name. Before you had a face. Before the zero was occupied.” Mara frowned. “You said they weren’t the first witness.” “They are not anymore.”
