ArtistDimly lit by the glimmer of my lamp, I sit alone here in this dreary room, waiting—longing—for you! All around, the world is eerily still; no one is awake but the little cricket, the night watchman, my clock, and I. Even the moon, with its silvery glow, has fled and left me all alone; black clouds now shroud the stars. Here by the window I lie—alas!—and weep; how can you leave your girl all by herself, when you swore you would be here by twelve? Do you hear it? Through the howling of the wild storm, the bell from the tower strikes one—one o’clock, O God!—and still you are not here! A sound! Is it only in a sweet dream? Or does it come from our blossoming tree? Away! He is already at the garden gate! An interior view of a room, illuminated by a warm glow of a lamp, with a young crying woman in white nightgown sitting on an armchair by the open window, looking outside towards a spooky figure in black coat entering through a garden gate under a dark cloudy rainy night sky with a full moon and European style village houses.
