ArtistA modern doctor's office with a male doctor sitting behind a large desk, RIGHT VIEW. A female patient sits on the other side of the desk, LEFT VIEW. The female patient wears an elegant blue business suit. The side of the female patient's head is partially open and an MRI-type image shows a large tumor. A speach bubble above the doctor says "All your tests are negative, you are perfectly healthy. It's all in your head."
As shocking as it sounds, women exhibiting symptoms of brain tumors are more likely to get misdiagnosed with a mental health problem. Weight loss, especially in young patients is attributed to anorexia, personality changes to anxiety or depression (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4582304/). As a result, 115% more women died of brain tumor than men in 2015 in the US (https://www.thebraintumourcharity.org/news/blog-post/wome…).
Let's all fight to stop the specter of 'hysteria' from killing even more people.
Estimates suggest that up to 10% of patients who present with symptoms commonly associated with mental health conditions have undiagnosed physiological conditions. Most of the patients affected are women. In this series, I want to highlight their struggles.
