They sent the factory first.
Sending people first had once been called courage; it was now understood as waste.
It crossed twenty-seven light-years around a reactor, machine shops, seed
foundries, and enough software to argue with a star system. No crew slept inside it.
When it arrived above Pelagos, it spent nine months tasting spectra, mapping
moons, counting impacts, watching storms worry the upper atmosphere, measuring
every orbit until the system ceased being scenery and became material. Then it bred
tools: needle drones went down to the iron moon and came back dragging nickel like
wolves with meat; skimmers cracked volatiles from dirty ice; smelters assembled
themselves in vacuum; tugs multiplied. Ore became beam, beam became rail, rail
became the first skeletal curve of something so large that for years it looked less like
architecture than a mistake nobody had remembered to stop.
The factory ship saved itself for last. Its foundries were unbolted by the machines
they had made, then tanks, radiators, shielding, trusses, finally the long spine that
had survived interstellar dark. A construction crawler—massive, many-legged, ugly
with manipulators—clamped onto the gutted hull and fed its parent into furnaces one
member at a time. The ship that had crossed the abyss to build a human future
disappeared into that future: pressure ribs, docking collars, reactor casings,
kilometers of floor nobody had yet stood on.
The wheel closed after thirty-four years and began to spin. Empty corridors acquired
an "up" and "down". Pumps shoved air through rooms whose doors had never
opened. Reservoirs filled; gardens woke under lamps and started making oxygen for
lungs still seventeen years away. The builder welded the final plates, crawled
onward, reached the first plates it had installed decades earlier, and found fatigue in
three seams. At 14:06 station time construction became maintenance without so
much as changing shifts.
When the human convoy finally braked into Pelagos, seven ships carried children,
embryos, tools, bad marriages, recipes, seed grain, grief, bureaucracy, and every
surviving argument about what humanity ought to become. Ahead waited a wheel
exactly where they would have built one: right inclination, distance, shielding
orientation, docking lights burning, air warm, water moving, gravity already
underfoot. Their first city in another system had been standing there long enough to
need maintenance.
As the first shuttle approached, the crawler was outside replacing a crossmember
made from the factory ship’s own keel. Sparks spilled soundlessly beneath its legs
while, inside the shuttle, a child pressed both hands to the glass and stared at the
machine walking across the world that had been waiting for her before she was
born.
While humanity crossed twenty-seven light-years to reach the frontier, the first
foothold had already become a home. Some assembly required.
