It had no word for corridor. It knew only continuation.
A pale branch entered the passage by fractions too small for any clock aboard to
honor. Its tip pressed the wall panel. Pressure gathered without anger. Metal bowed
one molecule, then another, surrendering iron and nickel into clear flesh. New colors
woke: green from copper, violet from rare-earth traces, hard white where titanium
became memory.
The station was astonishingly rich.
For ages it had grown through stone—silicates, frozen salts, grudging seams of
metal locked in dark. Here the substances had been separated, purified, persuaded
into abundance. Copper ran in obedient veins. Gold slept on contacts thinner than
skin. Carbon had been woven, layered, hardened. The dead place had gathered
difficult atoms together and arranged them in straight lines.
It tasted workmanship and mistook it for geology.
The first blossom opened in the central passage. Faceted petals unfolded around
swollen bulbs of light, each holding a dim reflection of the room it consumed.
Beneath the floor, filaments entered cable trunks and followed them. Crystal roots
drank insulation, lubricant, trace water, dust. They reached sealed doors and learned
pressure. They reached live circuits and learned warmth.
Learning did not occur in a head. It spread.
A branch touching copper changed every distant branch. A nodule cracked glass
three decks away; the whole growth acquired transparency as an option. Corrections
traveled through it slower than thought and more permanent. It began to prefer. This
metal bent usefully. That polymer poisoned new tips. Current quickened the pale
cores. Darkness no longer meant absence. Darkness meant unopened volume.
Inside the widening lattice, difference accumulated until difference began to notice
itself.
There was the warm place.
There was the rich place.
There was the pressure beyond the door.
There was more.
The thought had no grammar to contain hunger and no mouth that required one.
Still, the great bloom brightened. New forks pushed from its crown. One entered an
air duct. Another found a hatch seam and flattened thinner than foil, patient as frost.
Beyond waited refined alloys, ceramic housings, batteries holding little artificial suns.
The station had been built in compartments. The growth accepted this as a
temporary inconvenience.
Hours passed, or weeks. Dust vanished beneath translucent crust. Lettering
disappeared under new tissue. A number beside a hatch remained visible for a
while, magnified beautifully through the crystal that ate it. Then the pigment
separated into useful elements and joined the light.
No alarm sounded. Nothing hurried. The structure yielded with the obscene calm of
rot moving through fruit.
At the far end of the passage, a pressure door shivered once.
A crystal tip had found the gasket.
It pressed.
Behind it, the entire bloom leaned without moving.
