This part of my fantasy milieu is called The Shattered Lands because it obviously suffered some cataclysmic devastation in ages past. The soil was blasted to ash and the bedrock was broken into pieces that cast geologic layers of stone this way and that, making the land uninhabitable. The yellow field is a pool of a strange molten material too hot to approach closely, and it gives off a poisonous gas.
