Ereshkigal Waiting
Autumn had brought its dead leaves upstairs.
Ereshkigal sat in a white dress beside an open book. She had stopped reading where somebody promised to return.
Beyond her bare feet, the hills turned the color of things kept too long in drawers. A bird waited on the wall. It had a small question about death but preferred to sing around it.
She had ruled the underworld for so long that nobody thought to bring her flowers.
Today a leaf landed beside her.
She picked it up carefully.
There was still a little afternoon in it.
