ArtistA mosaic made entirely of small pieces of stone, in the style of Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, in brilliant high-contrast glassy colors, with gold outlines, of a close Common Dolphin surfacing in open water, captured at the moment its head and back break through a swell. The dolphin is moving left, with its head and part of its back above the surface. The beak is short and slim, with a slightly lighter tip and a visible mouth line. Part of the dorsal fin is visible near the upper right of the body, partly submerged. The tail is inside the image but underwater. Much of the body stays just below the waterline, so it appears slightly distorted and translucent, as if it’s riding inside the wave. The sea is a deep, saturated blue with choppy, rolling swells and small ripples across the surface. A crest of water arches over the dolphin’s back, dotted with tiny droplets and bubbles that catch the light and sparkle. In the upper left, a second splash of foamy white water suggests another animal just submerged or surfacing, so this dolphin may be part of a pod. At the bottom right, more churned water and spray hint at further movement. Below the dolphin, a dark reflection and shadow on the water mirror its shape. The image has a dynamic feel of motion. The tight framing, rich blues, and sharp detail on the dolphin’s face against the soft, rippled water give it a sense of fast motion frozen in time.
A mosaic of a dolphin porpoising out of the ocean, at the moment its head and back break through a wave, with water still flowing off its back, and water splashing nearby as from other dolphins in a pod.
