More about Water Vampire VerYGood2Best STOLZ backstory MOROI

There are many types of Water Vampires (WVs), thought to be drowned persons who come back as a kind of Moroi vampire, sleeping underwater in the daytime. The sun doesn't destroy them instantly, but it does burn by drying them out. In any case, their sleep depends on the darkness of deep waters ; sometimes, they inhabit shipwrecks, making a cubbyhole in the ship to keep out the sun.

These vampires are able to drink the blood of all types of water creatures for sustenance. However, they need mammalian blood sometimes, in order to maintain their aging resistance and supernatural powers. At those times a powerful craving takes control of them, and it has to be satisfied ; otherwise, the WV rapidly ages and dies.

Scholars know very little about water vampires, particularly since the WVs can no longer interact with human society, although the reason why they shun the living is unclear. Do they feel ashamed of their undead state or their appearance ? Do they need to remain immersed in water ? They are said to retain their sentience and personality - there are stories of WVs acknowledging relatives on a ship or a boat dock. Do they stay near the site of their drowning ? Some are seen over and over in the same place but, again, there are stories - when relatives see these WVs, sometimes they're operating far from their homeland. No one is even sure that all WVs are drowning victims ; in the stories, often the WV relative didn't drown, they just disappeared. This suggests that sometimes water vampires are made by other water vampires. There are other stories where WVs fall in love with the victim and choose romance over food ; the subsequent transformation is said to bond the pair for eternity - or until one of them suffers final death.

It is said in Asia that some of the ones there are indeed the corpses of drowning victims, transformed into vampires by some necromancer and forced into bondage. However, these enslaved water zombies seem to lack sentience, serving only as guards. In any case, these can only account for a small percentage of water vampire incidents.

WVs are somewhat more likely to be found in fresh water, where mammals are rare, so fresh-water WVs have to rely on animals and humans who come down to the water to drink or fish. Salt-water WVs can hunt dolphins, whales, and seals - as well as fishermen. All of this indicates that WVs might well be drowning victims, since more people drown in fresh water, and that they tend not to migrate to the best hunting grounds - but again, there are numerous exceptions.
