Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican artist who is best known for her self-portraits that reflect her experiences and emotions. She began painting after a bus accident left her with severe injuries and disabilities that she would deal with for the rest of her life.
Kahlo's work is known for its vibrant colors and surreal imagery, often featuring animals and plants as well as symbolic references to Mexican culture. Her paintings often address themes such as identity, gender, and politics, and her personal life and struggles with physical pain and mental illness also heavily influenced her work.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including a turbulent marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera, Kahlo achieved significant recognition during her lifetime and continues to be celebrated as a feminist icon and cultural symbol in Mexico and around the world.
