I like the way that this character could be of either gender. In fact, I don't want to ruin it by even just elaborating on it - I'd rather let the issue stand as is.

The collar around the character's neck bespeaks some kind of enslavement, and the character does seem sad, but I'd rather think of the collar as the seal that locks down a space helmet, and the expression as calm and stoic rather than sad.
