“When.” The word remained in the air. The tiny black line at the center of the wooden circle widened. Green light appeared beside it, crossing the mark exactly like the ribbon around Mara’s wrist. Lumio flashed: SYMBOL MATCH — COMPLETE. Then: DATE — DOES NOT EXIST. Memoris stared at the screen. “That is impossible.” “Not impossible,” said the First Wizard. “Unrecorded.” The vanished wizard held the wooden circle. “I remember drawing this mark.” “You did more than draw it,” said the First Wizard. “You used it to separate everything that happened before from everything the room was allowed to remember after.” Mara looked at the child. “So the ribbon marks a boundary.” “A wound,” the child said. Liora touched the silver key. “And we are on both sides of it.” Lumio displayed: LOCATION — BEFORE FIRST RECORDED CHOICE. Biblior frowned. “A location cannot be a choice.” “The first room did not understand the difference between place, memory and decision,” said the First Wizard. “That misunderstanding became the Cottage.” The floor shook. The hidden staircase opened again. Warm golden light rose from below. At the bottom stood a door that had not been there before. It had no handle or keyhole. Across its wood were two names: MARA and LIORA. Everyone watched as the letters faded. Underneath appeared a single blank line. The Cottage whispered, “DO NOT COMPLETE.” Sir Fegelot leaned toward Madam Arabica. “I assume that means we should complete it.” “Your instincts remain catastrophic,” she replied. Mara stepped onto the first stair. The vanished wizard caught her arm. “Wait. I remember this door.” “Then why does it lead to before the separation?” “We built it so we could return to the moment if we had made a mistake.” The First Wizard looked away. “And we decided we had not.” The child laughed without amusement. “You decided.” Liora followed Mara. “What happens if we open it?” “You see the record before it became two.” “And the name?” “Maybe.” Mara glanced back. “Maybe?” “The original name was never written down,” said the First Wizard. “Writing it made the room react.” “Then how do we find it?” The child raised her ribbon. “We remember why it was spoken.” They descended. Linora, Biblior and Memoris followed. At the bottom, the door filled the corridor. Liora placed her palm against the wood. “It is warm.” Mara touched the other side. A memory flashed between them: two hands on opposite sides of a door, one knocking from within, the other from outside. Both belonged to the same child. Mara pulled back. “I saw both.” “So did I,” Liora said. The child stood between them. “You are beginning to remember the shape.” Lumio flashed: RECORD OVERLAP — 31%. Then: DO NOT FORCE MERGE.
