Emperor Menilik was the Ethiopian king who defeated the invading Italian army back in 1896. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Ethiopian army lead by Emperor Menilik annihilated the Italian army. It was the first time an African nation decisively defeated a European army. It was a beacon of hope and a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel for the rest of Africa. The victory is commemorated every year on the 1st of March.
