Waldemar still clutched the luminous compendium tightly to his chest as the ancient bell continued to toll somewhere beyond the veils. Warm. Slow. Almost mournful. Each chime made the silver lines in the tree trunks flicker less brightly, as if the forest itself were listening for something far older than the paths. The darkness between the trees was creeping closer now. Not fast. Not hungry. Rather cautious. Watchful. Varaan let out a deep, warning growl and once again positioned himself protectively in front of Kaelen and Waldemar. The heavy bags at his sides clinked softly against each other as the blue lines beneath his dark scales pulsed restlessly. “They’re coming closer,” the old riding dragon murmured. The path warden slowly raised his rotating staff. The small gears within it now screeched almost continuously. “No,” he said in a pale voice. “They’re only testing whether the veils are faint enough.” Kaelen glanced nervously into the shadows between the ancient trees. "Who?" But before the pathfinder could answer, the silver rift began to flicker again. The image of the vast cavern reappeared between the veils. This time, clearer. Toddy was still standing in the red boat on the golden stream. Salam Ander beside him seemed motionless, like an ancient statue of embers and ash. Even from this distance, Waldemar could now make out the golden symbols on Toddy's bag. And Toddy was looking directly at them. Not by chance. Not blurry. As if he could truly see them now. Waldemar's heart began to beat faster. Slowly, Toddy raised a hand. At that same instant, the compendium began to glow red once more. New symbols appeared on its pages. Not written. Remembered. The second bearer has seen the path. Kaelen recoiled in shock. "He really sees us..." Suddenly, the entire forest trembled. This time, more intensely than before. Several of the silver veils suddenly tore open between the trees like thin fabric in a storm. Beyond it, no landscape was visible. Only shifting darkness. The World-Keeper immediately raised its massive head. The markings on its stony skin now glowed almost white. Then the ancient being spoke again. Its voice made even the roots of the trees tremble. "The depths remember." Instantly, the bell fell silent. Absolute stillness spread. Then, deep beneath the forest, a long, slow breath sounded. Not animal. Not human. Much greater. Varaan froze instantly. "No..." he murmured hoarsely. Kaelen looked at him, startled. "You know that sound?" The old riding dragon didn't answer immediately.
