The Bastard Operator From Hell (BOFH) is a fictional rogue computer operator created by Simon Travaglia. The origin story of the BOFH character began in the late 1980s, when Travaglia, working as a technical assistant (operator) at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, started writing satirical and "oddball" stories inspired by his frustrating work dealing with users and system administration. According to Travaglia, around 1988/89, he wrote the first related stories on a Tandy TRS-80 Model 100 laptop and posted them to Usenet under the early title "Striped Irregular Bucket."
