An early train
was on my mind
for I would have
to leave behind
my love, my life
all I knew
whether or not
I wanted to.
The earth itself
gave me a kiss
sweet with dew
a glittering coverlet
and as I hesitated
by the door
she warmed my heart
and mind once more
with the last of the roses
and climbing vines
that drew my eyes up
to the window
where I did find
my love looking
back at me
with glistening eyes
like the dew
for she was crying
but she waved to
me cheerfully
and tried to smile
I waved back
but all the while
the early train
was on my mind
and then and there
I vowed
I'd never again
leave behind
my love, my life,
all I knew
whether or not
I wanted to.
