Spring Unfolding_inspired by_Chapter III_The Wild Wood_Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
What a story
it had been
when Spring
unfolded itself
in picture scenes
so numerous and
highly coloured
with illustrations, each
resembling none
of the others, all
stately and beautiful
in their own way,
taking the stage
one by one,
day by day—
Purple Loosestrife
was the first
to appear, shaking her
luxuriant tangled locks
over the mirror
of the whispering
river bank,
laughing at her own
reflection
looking back—
Then tender and wistful
Willow-herb
like a soft pink
sunset cloud
drew up quickly
followed by a crowd
of Comfrey coming
hand-in-hand with
purple and white
dotting the landscape
as if with a paint brush
bringing delight—
Then came
the delaying
diffident dog-rose, who
chose to step lightly
with delicate petals
to announce as if with
string music and
stately chords
that we had now come
to June and soon
a shepherd boy
for the nymphs
to woo, and
knights for the ladies
would be
arriving, too,
along with a prince
to kiss
the sleeping summer
back to life, to the
bliss of summer
where drowsing animals
all around,
would come out
of their snug homes
within the ground,
for the sun
was upon them
with its brilliant gold
and the earths
colours would
unfold,
spring out
of the earth
within a birth, a
symphony of life
and love
from the ground up
to the heavens above,
all a symphony, yes
a symphony of life,
and love.
