**Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis)

Habitat: Rainforests and coastal woodlands of Madagascar

Description:
The Aye-aye is one of the strangest primates on Earth, belonging to the lemur family. It is easily recognized by its huge eyes, large ears, bushy tail, and - most famously - its elongated, thin middle finger. This finger is used like a natural tool: the aye-aye taps on tree bark to locate hollow spaces with larvae, then gnaws a hole using its rodent-like teeth and uses the long finger to fish out the grub. This unique feeding method is called percussive foraging, and no other primate in the world does it this way.

Threats:
The aye-aye faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to deforestation and slash-and-burn agriculture in Madagascar. Tragically, many rural communities consider the aye-aye a harbinger of death or bad luck - leading villagers to kill it on sight. This superstition has drastically reduced its population.

Very slow reproduction rate - females give birth to only one offspring every two to three years.
