A village square. Snow falls. A woman stands beside a bird. Inside the bird is a fish. Above the houses hangs an enormous face.
OFFICIAL: Where are the knights?
WOMAN: They went to find the spring.
OFFICIAL: Without authorization?
WOMAN: They were cold.
OFFICIAL: Their satin was issued for ceremonial purposes. Cold is outside its terms of reference.
He writes this down.
FACE: Snow.
OFFICIAL: Precisely.
FACE: Snow.
OFFICIAL: We have already acknowledged that.
FACE: Snow.
OFFICIAL: Repetition does not strengthen your case.
The bird takes one step toward the woman.
OFFICIAL: Is that your fish?
WOMAN: It belongs to the bird.
OFFICIAL: Is the bird aware of this?
WOMAN: Ask it.
OFFICIAL: I am asking you. The bird has no address.
The woman opens her coat. A small yellow sun glows inside.
OFFICIAL: You should have declared that.
WOMAN: I was hoping it would keep us warm.
OFFICIAL: It may. Nevertheless, there are houses specifically designated for hope.
WOMAN: Their doors are locked.
OFFICIAL: To preserve the hope.
A knight enters, wearing white satin. He is almost invisible against the snow.
KNIGHT: We found the spring.
OFFICIAL: Where?
KNIGHT: Under the snow.
OFFICIAL: Then you found snow.
KNIGHT: There was water.
OFFICIAL: Snow frequently makes that claim when subjected to pressure.
The knight holds out a wet glove.
OFFICIAL: You have damaged your uniform.
KNIGHT: My hands were freezing.
OFFICIAL: You keep returning to your hands.
Silence. The fish moves inside the bird.
WOMAN: Come here.
The knight stands beside her. The bird moves closer. After a moment, the official approaches too.
WOMAN: Are you cold?
OFFICIAL: I am here to observe.
She opens her coat a little wider.
FACE: Snow.
The official reaches for his notebook, then leaves his hand near the warmth.
