Recently, an art friend and I have been reworking coloring books, particularly those traditional drawings with lined, intricate mandalas. We use a black Sharpie, which has the same width of lines as the original drawings. Yesterday, while working on these, I noticed that adding more black lines can make the images feel a bit creepy. This contrasts with the Japanese aesthetic known as Kawaii, which is characterized by a sense of cuteness. Are these intricate mandalas creepy or cute?
