ArtistSeveral small, filthy, metal dog cages are stacked one atop another on a pickup truck, whose tailgate is open. Inside the cages, cramped together, are dogs of various sizes and breeds, all in very rough shape. The dogs are destined for the meat market. Being kind extends to dogs, whom we humans have chosen and bred o be our companions, pets, and partners in search and rescue, detection or disease, explosives, or drugs, herding, guarding, and assistance. We benefit from their senses, like smell, and their problem-solving capacities for critical human needs. Dogs are not meat. They are sentient creatures who love us. By the same token, we owe the entire animal kingdom kindness.
