Prompt

The pirate Adventures Use just the original aesthetic of the uploaded image 2. Now observe the image 1 closely. Do not attempt to preserve its original history, composition, or meaning. Use its visual elements as ingredients for an entirely new story. Select the most interesting elements, detach them from their original roles, and assign them new purposes, relationships, and meanings. Then, invent a surprising event that connects them—something that has already happened or is about to happen. Alter scale, position, function, perspective, or physical logic whenever doing so makes the story more interesting. Contradicting the original image is permitted. Create a surreal, minimalist, poetic, and meaningful scene that represents a pivotal moment in this new story. The result must evoke the image of a story never seen before. Do not illustrate the original image. Do not explain it. Transform its ingredients into something unexpected.

More about the Great Gull Goddess

The gulls took up their rosaries and prayed to the Great Gull Goddess that the pirate would die soon. They were particularly interested in what lay behind his sunglasses.

I have seldom encountered such religious devotion outside a disputed inheritance.

They circled my raft with the patient confidence of creditors. One carried a rosary nearly as long as himself, which suggested either considerable sin or an unusually large appetite.

“Not today,” I told them.

They prayed harder.

Túpac the Inca’s tunic hung from the mast. How it had come into my possession was a matter upon which I intended to remain scholarly and vague. It made a tolerable sail, though I doubted the emperor had ever dressed himself with navigation in mind.

Above it flew the Jolly Roger, looking quite happy. A skull enjoys certain advantages at sea. It cannot drown, needs no provisions, and has already survived the worst thing the gulls can wish upon it.

I raised my telescope toward Sri Lanka.

“I am going to train with the Tamil Tigers,” I announced.

This sounded enterprising until I considered that I was approaching an island on a floating garden, wearing sunglasses, beneath an Inca’s laundry. Any military organization willing to accept me on that evidence would require closer inspection than I cared to give it.

Besides, I had brought a gramophone instead of ammunition. This had been deliberate. A man may regret his choice of music, but he seldom has to explain it before a tribunal.

The gramophone played a waltz. The raft turned slowly in the current. Sri Lanka remained where it was, showing no eagerness to become involved.

A bottle floated past containing a message. I fished it out.

It said, TURN BACK.

There was no signature, which is the customary courage of unsolicited advice.

I put it back in the bottle and sent it ahead. If it reached the island first, they could prepare themselves.

By evening the gulls had formed a committee. Their largest representative landed on the mast and looked from my face to the setting sun, plainly dissatisfied with the day’s progress.

“You may as well go home,” I said. “I intend to live.”

He gave a harsh cry.

I did not understand the language, but I recognized the tone. I had heard it before from a man whose rich uncle had recovered.
