ArtistIn times of climate change, orangutan populations have declined very steeply. A number of factors combine with climate change to reduce orangutan populations: deforestation, illegal logging, establishment of oil palm plantations, soil erosion, fires, lower water tables, and weather changes. Surviving orangutans have been relegated to isolated areas with a dearth of food and a lack of genetic diversity. Land use change combined with climate could ultimately result in the extinction of orangutans. The image emulates historical photography, and shows a black-and-white National Geographic photograph of one of the last orangutan mothers with a seven-year-old young male orangutan eating a strip of bark. The photograph is intended to be a shocking wake-up call.
Orangutans cannot adapt as quickly as the climate changes and as humans take away their habitats.
