ArtistA large, Roman-style indoor smithy. There is a large hearth against the back wall, but no other furniture or tools. The three Wiskerteers, three anthropomorphic cats stand in the center of the room. The first, Artemis, is fully white, the second, Purrsephone, is roundish and orange and the third, Athena, is an elderly tabby. The three Wiskerteers wear red robes and cloaks and carry a rapier in a sheath attached to their belt.
Meanwhile, the three Wiskerteers return to Antwarp to search for clues concerning the disappearance of the royal smith. All they know is that he vanished when Lord Laverno fled Antonesia. They visit his smithy and find it deserted. The hearth is extinguished and cold. No fire burned there for days, perhaps even weeks. All the tools, even the heavy anvil are gone.
“How could a giant anvil just vanish?” Artemis wonders, staring at the empty space where a faint outline on the floor hints that an anvil used to stand there.
“Lord Laverno vanished right in front of my eyes,” Athena reminds her, “who knows what else he can do?”
They inspect every nook and cranny, every recess and hook on the wall. They find only a mild coating of dust that has accumulated since the floors stopped being swept.
“Perhaps we should ask the neighbors,” Purrsephone suggests. “They must have noticed something.”
“You do that,” Athena replies. “I want to inspect this hearth more closely.”
