Here stands the Madonna of Suprematism, looking as though she has given birth to every revolutionary idea in civilization and still has a few thousand waiting in the nursery.
Her face belongs to Byzantine eternity, but her garments have been assaulted by Malevich’s geometry. Squares, triangles, and rebellious planes tumble about her like politicians escaping a burning parliament.
The gold background promises heaven, while the black, crimson, and turquoise insist that heaven requires substantial reconstruction.
Now, Barbara Kruger understood that an image could be a weapon, and this Madonna has dispensed with the weapon’s instructions. Her geometry speaks before language gets its trousers on.
Suprematism supposedly liberated art from the tyranny of objects. Yet here is Mother herself, calmly presiding over the wreckage of representation.
A thousand young ideas, and not one obedient child among them.
